The Patrol Division is the backbone, or spine of the Police Department. The Patrol Division is the most visible of all of the divisions in the department and patrol in marked Police units, those with the familiar light bar and lettering identifying each patrol unit, and the 911 logo on each car. The primary duties of the Patrol Division are the preservation of the rights of citizens and the reduction of fear in the community, through the prevention of crime, protection of person and property and the maintenance of order in public places. Our complaint report takers (CRT personnel), are trained in medical emergency dispatch and are the people on our end of a 911 call. Our dispatchers are also EMD trained. All of our Police Officers received “First Responder” training when they were in training as recruit officers in the Police Academy. Many times the officer’s skills in first aid, CPR, etc. are a determining factor in a good outcome at motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, etc., as most often they are the first at the scene of these emergencies.

The sum and substance of the Police Officer is that he is an agent of the people. His position is created by their necessity, the power which he possesses comes from them and his salary is paid by their administrative forces. Their function is best described by the mission statement of the department “The mission of the Niagara Falls Police Department is to work in partnership with the community to protect life and property, solve neighborhood problems and enhance the quality of life in the City of Niagara Falls while protecting the rights of all and applying the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and accountability.”
